An Asset Management System for Highways

This paper attempts to provide the framework, and some considerable detail, concerning an asset management system for highways. Based on the principles developed by the water industry in England and Wales it is aimed at utilities which are starting out in the development of AM; it is not intended that it should serve to replace the standard systems which already exist in a number of countries though it may serve as an aide memoire:

A Short Course in Asset Management

How many teaching establishment include even the shortest module on asset management? Shouldn’t every university include at least the basics in their undergraduate courses in engineering, architecture and building? I can’t see any evidence on-line of it so decided to present my own:

Criticality

Whilst risk management has been around since the 1990s and found its way into asset management through the concept of ‘criticality’, there is little consistency in its application. This paper provides a basis for development and discussion:

An Asset Management System for Social Housing

Whilst many businesses and utilities have used asset management systems with a fair degree of conformity, the housing sector seems to particularly fragmented in its ideas. Whilst standards are laid down by governments, the methodologies by which they are implemented vary tremendously and there is little evidence of logical condition and performance grading. This paper seeks to suggest a methodology which is applied specifically to social housing stock, though it could be easily adapted to any group of buildings:

Condition Grades for Social Housing

This draft document provides a suggested list of condition grades for social housing which are split by the essential components and five grades used commonly in asset management:

Draft CGs

These are now incorporated into a draft AMS for Social Housing:

Knowledge Sharing

I got confused when looking at this, a subject dear to my heart, as no-one seemed to agree on what it is. I put my thoughts on paper and you can read them here:

Knowledge Sharing

Following this, I spent time looking, generally in vain, for good examples of knowledge sharing; but I did come across this:

http://www.iwawaterwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Articles/CompendiumofSanitationSystemsandTechnologies_0

which is probably the most useful paper on the subject ever!

And then I came across another great example, this time on another of my subjects (asset management): http://www.cogta.gov.za/mig/docs/7.pdf

And here’s a bad example from the EPA which asks more questions than it answers:
